Littoral bypassing and beach restoration in vicinity of Port Hueneme California
Port Hueneme Harbor, Calif, constructed in 1940, resulted in average annual erosion of 1,200,000 cu yd from shoreline downcoast of harbor; cause was diversion by north jetty of harbor of littoral sand movement into Hueneme canyon; sand bypass system was established by offshore breakwater; comparison of design of structure to impounding characteristics experienced during three bypass cycles indicates that dimensions and capacity of sand trap formed by offshore breakwater can be based upon diffraction patterns of prevailing wave trains at two ends of structure and is independent of depth and dimensions of entrapment area; rate of impoundment is equal to rate of littoral drift.
