Contribution to static design of embedded arches
Embedded elliptical arch is investigated from viewpoint of reciprocal relationships between its displacements and those of surrounding soil, friction forces developed by arch apex moving upwards or caving-in being taken into account; approximate formulas are derived for shape of pressure line, moments acting on arch, and safety against fracture; crack width is determined for case of embedded ring arch with three hinges; study applicable to tunnel design.
