Engineers break paving tradition at O'Hare
Work at Chicago, Ill airport includes holding aprons, two new taxiways and 2665 ft long runway extension, all constructed with continuous reinforcing; advantages over conventional reinforcing are greater structural strength to withstand heavy loads of future superjets, and fewer transverse joints facilitating maintenance; it also resulted in reducing critical pavement depth by 3 in. and noncritical depths by 2 in.; sub-base specifications and testing with multipronged scratch template; paving equipment and details of taxiway bridge crossing highway, with radiant heating system.
