Ideal stress state in roof and sides of tunnel excavated in homogeneous rock is examined, and formulas are given for radial and tangential stresses at boundary; effect of rock stratification and shape of tunnel cross section on stress distribution in tunnel wall and timbering is investigated; formulas are derived for tunnel roof displacement and elastic deformation of supports, as well as for required thickness of tunnel arch for given rock pressure.
