Construction work of New Shimizu tunnel was started in Aug 1963 as link in chain of construction of additional track on Joetsu line, penetrating foot of Tanigawa-dake (1963 m in altitude) which stands over border of Gunma and Niigata prefectures; its total length is 13. 49 km; work in progress is expected to be completed in 1967; tunnel design, geology, and state of work executed are reported.
