Soft ground tunnelling for Toronto subway
Above- and underground tunnel of 16-ft ID and station tunnels of 24-ft ID 500 ft long, used four shields, 17 ft 6 in. OD to drive running tunnels, and two shields, 25 ft 9 in. OD for station tunnels; all hydraulic equipment was incorporated completely within shield structure leaving rear of shield unobstructed by trailing pumps, tanks, motors and associated pipework.
