Stable channels with gravel-paved beds
Hydraulics of gravel rivers and gravel canals which exhibit beds that are characterized by distinct natural pavements consisting of coarsest material available to flow is discussed, with particular reference to their roughness, cross section, slope and adjustment to reduction in load; problem of representative sampling and analysis of natural gravel pavements; regime type formulas for relating stable dimensions and slopes of gravel channels to discharge and bed material size are developed; discharge range from 1 to 100,000 cfs and bed material size range from 0.5 in. to 18 in. are covered; most of data refer to channels known to have low bed load transport rates and conclusions arrived at are restricted to this condition.
