Waterproofing strain gages on reinforcing bars in concrete exposed to sea
Strain measurements were needed in study of performance during storms, of new type of breakwater that consists of large reinforced concrete caissons with seaward wall perforated by 3-ft diam holes to assist in dissipating wave impact energy; gages were mounted on reinforcing bars using two-component epoxy cement; they were waterproofed by coating with layers of epoxy, air-drying silicon resin, and microcrystalline wax, respectively; thin-walled steel pipe was slipped over gage area, spot-welded in place, etc.
