Waterproofing Strain Gages on Reinforcing Bars in Concrete Exposed to the Sea
Strain measurements were needed in a study of the performance of a new type of breakwater during storms. No single waterproofing substance combining impermeability, strength, flexibility, covering power, and the ability to bond to the reinforcing bar and the cable jacket was found. The strain gages were of the bonded metal foil type, 0.09 in. wide by 1 in. long, on an epoxy backing. We originally intended to mount them on the longitudinal ribs of the reinforcing bars, since this involved the least change in the cross section of the bars. In this position, however, the gages were vulnerable to physical damage and rather difficult to waterproof. The first step in waterproofing the gages was to build up a cover over each gage and the end of the lead wire. A two-component epoxy that cured at room temperature was used.
