Drop structure, Cayuga Inlet Cayuga Lake, New York
Drop structure proposed for Cayuga Inlet was studied in 1 to 20-scale model; tests were concerned with overall flow conditions, water-surface elevations upstream from structure, and energy dissipation characteristics for range of tailwater depths; use of 12-ft-radius abutment walls instead of wing walls of original design reduced drawdown at abutments, improved basin action, and reduced construction costs; addition of 3-ft-high vertical wall at downstream edge of original crest still was required to obtain adequate water levels upstream from structure; tests demonstrated that baffles were not required for energy dissipation and that apron 50 rather than 60 ft long as originally proposed was adequate.
