A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Station sited on tidal mudlands, where stiff clays are overlain by soft silty clay 10 to 40 ft thick, inadequate to carry any heavy loads; foundations were either excavated within steel sheet piled cofferdam down to stiff clay, or carried on bearing piles; it is concluded that equilibrium shear strength of clay is more accurate basis for calculation than is immediate shear strength.
