Pavement for New Jersey turnpike designed for high axle loads
118 mi turnpike was built for 36,000 lb axle load; embankments are being built in layers not to exceed 6 in. of loose material; upper 28 in. of all fills are compacted to 95% of maximum density; type of base course depended on whether 4 1/2 in. asphaltic concrete or 10 in. portland cement concrete pavement was applied; reinforcing of 7. 0 lb per sq yd was specified for control of cracking; transverse control joints are spaced 75 to 80 ft apart.
