Description of wall which prevents encroachment of sea into basin of Wilmington and Long Beach, Calif, harbor areas where ground level is affected by oil field subsidence; 32-in. wide trench was excavated to depths up to 45 ft by ladder-type trenching machine and buckets of closed clamshell type; clay backfill was placed by machine consisting of puddling ram and hopper; work stages illustrated.
