Concrete motorway springs up in Africa
Dual two-lane 12-mi Accra-Tema Motorway, in southern part of Ghana, took 2 1/2 yr to build; it was conceived as part of future rectilinear grid serving defined area of industrial development; two 24-ft roadways are separated by median strip; there are no expansion joints in concrete pavement, only contraction joints every 40 ft; there are three under-bridges and one overbridge, and three wide underpasses; most of culverts were precast in 3-ft 6-in. long rectangular units; sketch is included.
