British practice for grouting granular soils
Permeability tests were carried out at site of new Blackwall Tunnel under River Thames in London; tests showed sands, gravels, and silts to be present; clay-chemical grout was selected for coarser layers and cheap low-viscosity chemical grout for finer layers; grouts were injected from pilot tunnels to form grouted annulus through which main tunnel has been driven; penetration of clay grouts was improved by removing coarse fraction in hydrocyclones during preparation.
