Settlement of mat foundation on thick stratum of sensitive clay
Foundation investigations for industrial plant on thick stratum of preconsolidated, sensitive clay show that drop in groundwater level by few feet would result in effective stresses exceeding preconsolidation pressure within upper portion of clay stratum; with such assumption, consolidation would not be governed by very flat recompression branch of consolidation curve, but in part by steep virgin compression branch of consolidation curve.
