Rock bolts anchor slab against uplift
Rock bolts used in mine and tunnel work to anchor overhead rock, are used to tie basement slab against up-lift of Pennsylvania project at Harrisburg; anchors permit use of 12-in. thick floor slab; alternative would have been extra 4-to 6-ft of concrete in slab to counteract uplift force of water table 8-ft above basement floor; as last step of procedure, hydraulic jack tensioned bars to about 44, 000-lb and nuts were given final tightening; threaded ends were cut off and insert areas were filled in with concrete.
