A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Experimental investigation covers buckling behavior under uniform vertical load of right square hyperbolic paraboloid; results are secured by observation of behavior of small scale plastic models fabricated from PVC; study focuses on defining form buckling takes in hyperbolic paraboloid and influence of edge member properties on magnitude of shell buckling load and ultimate load; initiation of shell buckling is mainly dependent on axial stiffness of edge members; strain gage readings and observation of loaded shells indicate formation of tension field along direction of tension diagonal in post-buckling region.
