Zoccolo dam gets waterproofed
Investigation of lining of 41,000 sq m of earth dam's upstream face included structural and material behavior of last 5 yr; dam is 66.50 m high and measures 480 m along its 8 m-wide crest; gradient of upstream slope varies from 1 to 2.5 at base to 1 to 2 at top, while downstream slope has mean gradient of 1 to 2; permeability of bottom and slopes decreases progressively with depth making continuous bituminous lining for waterproofing upstream face of dam necessary, continued at toe with deep vertical concrete curtain; layer varies in thickness from 3.5 m at bottom to 3 m at top; material is graded from 1 to 200 mm and has coefficient of permeability of order 10-2cm/sec.
