A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Principles of rock mechanics are explained, and review is made of various theories concerning their application to dam design; particular attention is given to rock slides and dam ruptures; several major catastrophical dam bursts are examined and attempt is made at explaining their causes; introduction of concept of "premature aging" into rock mechanics, caused by various chemical, mechanical and hydromechanical factors, is suggested.
