Electro-osmosis stabilizes Earth dam's tricky foundation clay
U S Army Corps of Engineers successfully stopped movement of West Branch Dam on Mahoning River by consolidating clay under dam through application of electro-osmosis to soil; electro-osmotic consolidation of soil involves process in which d-c electric potential, set up in soil by means of electrodes, induces flow of water in pores of even fine-grained clay toward negative electrode, or cathode; installation of over 1000 electrodes-cathodes and anodes and dewatering procedure.
