Failure of reinforced concrete due to brittle fracture of reinforcement
Cause of collapse of some precast reinforced concrete portal frames on farm building indicates that failure was due to brittle fracture of steel reinforcement; tests indicated that failure of portals occurred because steel used had relatively high transition temperature and, as result, steel became very brittle at temperatures of order 10 C; concrete at eaves section must have been cracked initially or cladding effect of concrete would have prevented steel from reaching these low temperatures.
