Australian bridge has unusual foundation -- Modern prestressed bridge is founded on composite steel and prestressed concrete piles up to 220 ft long
Taren Point bridge spanning George's River has seven spans totaling 1662 ft; deck width is 87 ft comprising six lanes of vehicular traffic and two pedestrian footways; southern abutment and six river piers are carried on piles of unique composite type, consisting of rolled steel lower section welded to prestressed concrete upper section; precast in lengths from 36 to 70 ft, pretensioned with sixteen 1/2-in. diam strands; 9-ft lengths of 14×14 in. H steel projecting 3 ft was welded later to lower steel section of composite pile; embedded portion was coated with epoxy resin and sand to improve its bond in concrete.
