Concrete slabs made from precast boxes
Light weight concrete floor system for multistory buildings, used successfully in South America for 15 yr and consisting of series of precast concrete cells (boxes) around which gridwork of reinforced concrete joists is poured, has been modified and fire-tested for application in United States; tests for fire resistance and structural adequacy on full size panel of system reported; design procedure and construction; advantages of system include high load capacity, long spans, freedom of column location, flat structural ceiling free of beams or drop panels, etc; cells can be used in large hyperbolic paraboloid shells where buckling is critical for usual 3 or 4 in. of shell thickness.
