Tallahatta Diatomite, Choctaw and Clarke Counties, Ala
Indurated beds of diatomite as much as 120 ft thick occur in Tallahatta formation of Eocene Age, which outcrops in belt 10-20 mi wide extending across Choctaw and Clarke counties; outcrop samples of diatomite have been studied in thin sections, and by X-ray and DTA methods; silica content varies from 77 to 88% occurring principally as opal; this diatomite has possible uses as filter aids, fillers, heat insulators, aggregates for concrete blocks and tile, and mild abrasives or polishing powders.
