Unusual design of Japan's Kurobe Dam demanded by bad rock in upper abutments; double curvature structure recently completed in mountainous region of Honshu Island, West and North of Tokyo in which upper portions of dam at either end were designed to act as vertical cantilevers, causing no thrust against abutments.
