Rate fixing in civil engineering contracts
Outline of factors to be taken into account by engineer when fixing rates for varied or additional works; 3 examples concerning excavation, concrete and shuttering show typical "make-ups" of schedule rates for tender for civil engineering works; in these examples on-cost percentages of 70, 10 and 5 are applied to labor, materials and plant contents, respectively; variations introduced in these items subsequent to award of contract, their effect upon original calculations and rates, and resultant creation of new items. (see also abstract in Surveyor v 122 Mar 30 1963 p 379-80)
