Investigation of seamless rolled railway wheels and ways of prolonging their service life
Crumbling and chipping on rolling surface are caused by heavy contact loads in rolling and are also related to chemical composition, mechanical properties and macrostructure; wheels should be made of low carbon, low alloy steel of good hardenability; high strength characteristics may be obtained by improving heat treatment with intermittent quenching in machine, followed by tempering. (see also English translation in Stal in English n 12 Dec 1962 p 966-8)
