Effect of diagonal bracing on earthquake performance of steel frame building
Diagonal bracing, intended to increase lateral strength of 2 steel frame buildings at University of Concepcion, was broken by Chile earthquake of May 21 1960; unbraced structures then resisted earthquake of May 22 with no further structural damage; computer study of strengthening effect of diagonal bracing when buildings were subject to ground motions recorded at 3 different earthquakes indicates that for some earthquakes, bracing may be beneficial; however, for other cases, bracing induces increased forces in frame which exceed strengthening effect of bracing.
