Tests on beams with sustained loading
Six pairs of concrete beams, each containing one beam reinforced with mild steel and one with Tentor steel with span/depth ratios of 20, 30 and 40, and all designed for same bending moment, were kept under full design load for 4 3/4 yr; during this period deflections increased to 3.14-3.94 times original; all beams became unserviceable, although their factor of safety against failure was over 3; test results were compared with deflections calculated by various methods; tests proved that limiting slenderness ratios in CP 114(1957), Clause 309a, Table 13, are excessive if substantial proportion of design superimposed load is to be supported for long period; revision is suggested.
