Common causes of failures are roof bolting in roads with solid coal-rib sides; installation of props underneath bars which are roof bolted, insufficient number of bolts, clearance between sides and roof bolted bars, weakness in roof strata parallel to road, effects of cross measure drives, faulted ground, time lag between roof exposure and bolting, and corrosion of bolts.
