Major quake fails to breach Montana Earth Dam
Hebgen earthfill dam, Montana was jarred for hours by earthshocks with maximum intensity of 7.8 on Richter scale; 44 yr old dam has concrete core wall 8 ft thick at top and considerably thicker at bedrock; cracking on order of 1 1/2 in. at crest of core wall and some minor leaks were reported; east abutment settled 8-10 in.; reservoir water was lowered 2 ft by sloshing. (p 24-5, p 26-8)
