General formula for arches with extensible suspension rods is derived from strain energy of structure; specific equations are then obtained; simplified membrane analogy method of solving bowstring arch is also introduced; results of laboratory investigation of 49 in. span aluminum models; experimental and analytical results were in good agreement.
