Geological and civil engineering aspects of hydroelectric developments in Scottish highlands
Geological setting of hydroelectric schemes is briefly described and reference is made to geomorphological development which has given rise to present land forms; it is then shown how geology is generally favorable for hydroelectric schemes providing watertight basins for reservoirs, safe dam sites, and stable rock for underground excavation; important individual details of Scottish dam design, construction of underground workings and methods of rock excavation and lining used are reviewed; finally, brief description is given of largest single project undertaken by North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board, namely, 400 Mw Cruachan pumped-storage installation.
