Furnas, Brazil's hydroelectric power plant
Rockfill dam with impervious clay core has maximum height of 127 m above Rio Grande River bed; large canal blasted in rock on river's left bank supplies water to head works and simultaneously to spillway dam; light 6.5 m diam penstocks convey water to eight Francis turbogenerators each delivering 160,000 kva at 15,000 v; spillway dam is equipped with seven 11.5 m wide 15.8 m high radial gates; to enable dam construction, river was temporarily diverted in 167 m long 15 m diam flume.
