Flour mill construction at Leith
Description of use of sliding shuttering in construction of building, which included slide for beam-and-column configuration combined with vertical perimeter walls; heavy-duty Swedish jacks of 22-ton capacity and hydraulic system with automatic control were used; building is 150×50 ft in plan, and 200 ft high; maximum quantities of materials per foot of lift in first three slides were 40 cwt of reinforcing steel and 15 cu yd of concrete; sliding rate was 6 to 8 in./hr; in fourth slide quantities were 55 cu yd of concrete per foot lift when sliding through beams, and 20 cu yd between beams; about 200 tons of reinforcing steel were placed during fourth slide.
