A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Magnitude and distribution of static normal soil stresses against underground structural cylinders are studied; new results, obtained from laboratory tests on cylinders of 4.5-in. diam buried in dry sand; test cylinders were split into longitudinal segments, and force acting on each 30° arc of soil-structure interface was measured; experimental program included cylinders encased in sheet of foam rubber; analytical predictions were made using idealized mathematical model and theory of elasticity.
