Investigation of maximum allowable water-cement ratios for mass concrete
Literature survey made to determine validity of limiting water-cement ratios (w/c) to 0.8 and 0.6 by weight, respectively, for interior and exterior concrete; tests for workability, strength, permeability, and durability were made on specimens from mixtures containing 6-in. aggregate both with and without fly ash, and with w/c from 0.6 to 1.1 by weight; results confirmed that it is possible and practical to proportion mass concrete mixtures, both with and without fly ash, with w/c up to 1.1 by weight, which act essentially like and consolidate as efficiently as mixtures with 1.0 w/c within limits recommended in standards.
