Investigation of Maximum Allowable Water-Cement Ratios for Mass Concrete
A literature survey was made to determine the validity of limiting water-cement ratios (w/c) to 0.8 and 0.6 by weight, respectively, for interior and exterior concrete as recommended in the Corps of Engineers Standard Practice for Concrete. The survey indicated that mass concrete with satisfactory strength and durability may be obtained with w/c in excess of the maximums presently allowed. Therefore, a laboratory investigation was conducted to confirm or disprove these indications. A series of mass concrete mixtures containing 6-in. aggregate both with and without fly ash, and with w/c from 0.6 to 1.1 by weight were made. Tests for workability, strength, permeability, and durability were made on specimens from these mixtures. The results confirmed that it is possible and practical to proportion mass concrete mixtures, both with and without fly ash, with w/c up to 1.1 by weight, which act essentially like and consolidate as efficiently as mixtures with w/c within the limits now prescribed. Mass concrete mixtures with 1.0 w/c apparently possess sufficient strength and impermeability to be used for massive sections of concrete structures. (Author)
