Maintenance work and bank protection measures used along particularly vulnerable stretch of 36 mi long ship canal in Great Britain constructed on soft ground are described; mass concrete was deposited behind sheet piles and brought up to above water level; nylon fabric was placed over ground to act as reverse filter to prevent fine earth being washed from behind concrete blocks; blanket of 3/4 in. gravel was placed over nylon fabric, and on this gravel were laid concrete blocks of 2 ft 3 in.×1 ft 6 in.×1 ft 3 in.
