Dynamic deflection of multi-storey buildings during earthquakes
Simplified equation is evolved to determine maximum horizontal deflection of multi-story buildings during earthquakes; deflection can be calculated knowing damping ratio, number of stories above ground and characteristics of site; from example of seven storied building, it is shown that method suggested gives maximum dynamic deflection quite close to that obtained by more rigorous analysis; further, if deflection may be taken as criterion, it is found in illustrative example that seismic coefficient ah=0.1 corresponds to N=3.0.
