Erecting giant girders
San Mateo-Hayward Bridge will cross San Francisco Bay in three orthotropic spans -- 750-ft suspended main span flanked by 375-ft anchor spans; seven 292-ft orthotropic spans, now complete, are located on either side of channel spans; remaining 20 high-level spans, also complete, have some elements of orthotropic design but carry light weight concrete deck; construction of bridge requires suspending 272-ton girder sections for 6 1/2 hr while workmen install more than 1400 bolts; final span will be closed with two girders weighing 520 tons each; channel span erection sequence is shown in diagrams.
