Extruded prestressed bridge
Solution to problem of bridging Semorile gorge, which links two tunnels through which Genoa-Rome Motorway passes; 229 m prestressed concrete bridge was constructed by casting each of parallel roadways as continuous monolithic box beam in successive segments, about 8.4 m in length, using steel mold on eastern abutment, and launching each bridge deck, as successive segments were cast, across gorge in what might be described as extrusion process; four pairs of piers range from about 23 to 75 m in height, were slip-formed and post-tensioned with Dywidag tendons which were spliced with simple couplers as pier height increased, etc.
