History and construction of large single-span road bridge across flooded Vltava valley in Central Bohemia; original proposal for bridge was made in 1940, but post-war developments necessitated new design; bridge consists of 1083 ft span steel arch rising from massive concrete abutments, and was constructed by cantilevering from temporary towers, bases of which had to be completed before flooding of valley after construction of Orlik Dam; road deck is supported by two 52 m high pylons from each abutment and by slender steel columns between steel arch and road deck; details of design and construction techniques are given.
