Aluminum orthotropic bridge deck
Orthotropic design, which permits extensive transverse distribution of wheel loads for maximum design efficiency, has been used for first time in aluminum bridge construction; total weight of deck, including shop-applied skid-resistant polyester resin-silica sand surfacing, 3/8 in. thick, is only 15 psf; this is probably lightest closed deck that has ever been designed for use by 20 ton trucks on 9 ft continuous spans; completely shop fabricated 300 sq ft panels weighing 4500 lb were installed by mobile crane.
