Shear connectors used to ensure interaction between steel girders and concrete slabs in composite bridge beams are liable to fatigue failure initiated by stress raisers in welds; CP 117 tabulates reduced allowable capacities for typical connectors to guard against this risk for different design lives; 83 push-out tests undertaken at Building Research Station on three types of connector to assist in specifying these allowable capacities are described; nine parallel tests on beams incorporating same three types of connector are also described.
