Movement of sea-bed drifters near Columbia river
Sea-bed drifters were dropped on continental shelf within 50 km of mouth of Columbia River from June to October 1966; 25% of these, recovered on nearby beaches and in trawls, provide first local view of residual movement of identified objects near bottom; net movement in water deeper than 55 m was north, and that at lesser depths was south and toward beach; drifters grounded in considerable numbers on ocean beach within 5 km north of north jetty of Columbia River and also on Clatsop Spit 5 km upriver on its south bank; relatively few were found on ocean beach near south jetty; movement near shore is in agreement with that deduced for bottom water, considering prevailing seasonal winds and waves and intrusion of seawater into estuary.
