Theoretical and experimental study; main drawback of usual shell structures lies in fact that skin plating cannot be fully utilized, either in compression or in shear; reinforced plywood construction is compared with standard type in which skin and stringers buckle at different stresses; with reinforced plywood design, weight saving of 5 to 50% can be effected.
