Tunneling through Garlock fault
Two shields were used in driving 5 mi long water supply tunnel through Tehachapi Mountains in Southern California; laser beam was used for tunnel alignment; 24-ft 4 in. diam steel shields are forced forward with ring of hydraulic jacks mounted at their rear ends; each one has thrust of 250 tons, for total of 11,500,000 lb.
