New duplicate blackwall tunnel
Old Blackwall Tunnel, opened in 1897, is duplicated by new tunnel situated approximately 230 yd downstream of and roughly parallel with existing tunnel; overall length of 30 ft 6 in. external diameter cast iron tunnel (including shafts) is approximately 2914 ft compared with 3116 ft for existing tunnel; main section, 2565 ft 6 in. long between caissons, was driven under compressed air; by late Eocene times entire area was covered by London clay, below which lay silty sands of Woolwich beds; compressed air methods of tunnel construction; tunnel was finished with aluminum sheeting coated on both sides with light gray plastic laminate; lighting and ventilation facilities.
